Pripyat is a ghost town located at the northern part of Ukraine near the border of Belarus. It was founded in 1970 to house the many workers of the Chernobyl power plant and their families. It was a city on the rise and was considered an incredibly desirable place to live. They were even scheduled to hold the grand opening of a new amusement park on May 1, 1986.

On April 26, 1986, one of the greatest disasters in human history occurred when two of the reactors in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had a meltdown, releasing deadly radioactive material into the air and creating dangerous conditions for anybody in the area. While the Russian government initially tried to contain the disaster and keep it quiet, they eventually realized the extent of the damage and danger, and ordered the evacuation of Pripyat on April 27. Originally, this evacuation was only supposed to be temporary, so most non-essential possessions were left behind. However, once a thorough investigation was done, it was discovered just how high radiation levels were, and a nuclear exclusion zone was created, barring families from ever returning.

Today, with radiation levels significantly lowered, you can now enter the exclusion zone and take a tour of the abandoned facilities (so long as you are careful to stay on the path and not touch anything).
