When you get hit with any kind of nasty illness, food is probably the last thing you want to think about. Nevertheless, it’s important that you fuel your body with the right nutrients to help you heal. Now we’d like to take the time to remind you to get your annual flu shot, but just in case you end up extra unlucky and get sick anyway, here are some ideas for excellent sick day foods so you can start feeling better as quickly as possible!
Broth – Not only does a hot broth help relieve sinus congestion, it’s also easy on your stomach and chock-full of electrolytes that help heal your body when you’re not feeling well. Just make sure you check the salt content on the box before you buy, since many store-bought broths are loaded with sodium.
Garlic – Garlic isn’t just delicious – it’s also great for your health. Studies have shown that aged garlic extract supplements may have the ability to decrease the intensity of cold and flu symptoms. Additionally, regularly consuming garlic may help to prevent sickness altogether, although more research is needed on that front.
Water – You already know this, but we’re going to remind you anyway: drink more water. It’s important to stay hydrated when you’re healthy, but even more so when you’re under the weather because dehydration can set in rapidly and cause severe health issues.
Fruit – Not only is fruit full of water to help keep you hydrated, it’s also nutrient-rich. Bananas are especially beneficial when you’re sick with a stomach bug because they’re packed with electrolytes and soluble fiber, which can help improve diarrhea symptoms.
Bland Foods – When your stomach is upset but you’re ready to try eating solid foods again, start with things that are bland and non-offensive, such as plain white rice, pasta, or bread.
Tea – Hot tea is very effective at relieving stubborn congestion – just make sure it’s not so hot that it further irritates your throat! To soothe a sore throat and cough you can add some lemon juice and honey, the latter of which has antibacterial properties and works to boost the immune system.
Ginger – Ginger has been used for medicinal purposes for ages now and is particularly effective at reducing nausea. Opt for ginger tea or some ginger candies to suck on, and be sure that they contain real ginger or ginger extract, rather than ginger flavor. Additionally, be mindful if you choose to drink ginger ale, as the carbonation has the potential to upset the stomach even more in some people.
